Onyx Mitts
Photo taken on day 1
In this photo, the mitts had just been completed. To date, I have not washed / blocked this project yet.
Overview
Completed on February 1, 2023
Pattern: Onyx Mitts by Universal Yarn
Yarn used: La Mia Merino; 100% wool
Yarn weight: Fingering (but feels like sport)
Size: M
Cost (yarn only): less than USD 10 (bought on a huge discount a long time ago; USD 12 for 5 skeins, I think)
Construction
Knitted in the round using Chiaogoo shorties
The mitts are knitted from the cuff down
Beginning with the pattern and ribbing on the cuff > split thumb and palm > finish rest of palm > go back to finish thumb
Cuffs are 1x1 rib; hand is done in stockinette; ribbing around finger ends are 1x1 twisted ribbing
Learnings / Modifications
Pattern called for twisted German cast on but I used tubular cast on and bind off
4 set up rounds for tubular cast on is too rigid - doesn’t feels stretchy
2 set up rounds for tubular cast on is perfect - enough stretchiness but is able to maintain structure without stretching out
Will pick up additional stitches around the thumb to close the gaps around the thumb gusset
Wear / Fit
The mittens have a loose fit on my hands and are slightly tighter around the cuffs
Cuffs were knitted with a smaller needle
The mitts are expected to be used ruggedly (walking the dog, hiking, doing laborious work) - so they’ve been knitted with the expectation that it’ll be put to the test
I’ve been using them almost everyday since they’ve been completed to walk my dog and it’s been holding up well so far - imagine the leash sliding back and forth on the gloves
First Wash + Block
No washing or blocking done yet
Care plan
No plans to wash or block in the mean time unless mittens get really dirty from the walks
Fun Facts
The cuffs are done using a smaller needle but for one of the thumbs, I forgot all about it and was using the smaller needle on the thumb till the cuff - the thumb has felt a little tight but not so uncomfortable that I wanted to undo it all and redo the thumb again
